The idea of getting a college education is getting a bit tarnished as public colleges and universities that employ professors with far left ideologies who teach students to think the same way they do get exposed on social media. There are many great schools out there, and social media has brought them to the surface creating more competition and more choices for college bound students to choose from.
The evolution of social media has made barriers to entry in many of these industries crumble. Anyone can now become a publisher and trusted source of information. As we have seen many times recently, some businesses, college and universities, and media companies are becoming less trusted in the eyes of consumers.
This has created a hyper-competitive and turbulent environment for higher education that have caused college professors to venture out on their own to teach their students. Two reasons why college professors are choosing to host their courses on their own websites. The first is intellectual property rights. Colleges and universities are starting to tell professors that they do not own the rights to their own course content that they have created. The professor owns all of the rights to his or her course content that they create. Now lawmakers in Iowa are looking to kill tenured professors at public universities. Second, is more money and freedom. The professor can charge say $395 for a single course and the more students to enroll the more the professor makes, which will be a lot more than what they would be paid by a university.
As a result, websites such as Sophia.org and study.com and booming right now as students are taking a boat load of classes at a cheaper price and transferring them to the university of their choice.
Given these turbulent times that we are in, look for more professors to start setting up their own courses on their own websites, and then getting them accredited with companies such as ACE Credit. so students can earn credits to be transferred to the university of their choice. Websites that are accredited by ACE Credit, can allow students to transfer courses taken on their websites to any college or university that accepts ACE Credit.
The American Council on Education (ACE) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) U.S. higher education association established in 1918. ACE’s members are the leaders of approximately 1,700 accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities and higher education-related associations, organizations, and corporations.
I have a client that has been with me for over a year now who is a Professor of Medicine teaching anatomy and physiology classes at Miami Dade College. He also teaches Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support classes on his website, www.drjcpr.com. The covid-19 pandemic has hit him hard. Since enrollment has declined during these turbulent times, Miami Dade College has laid him off. So he is working on putting his anatomy and physiology classes on his website to offer college students an alternative to taking it on campus.
I’m also in the process of developing a 8 week Introduction to Social Media Marketing course that will be hosted on Wynmore Academy. I will be having a pre-sale campaign very shortly. Internet technology along with social media has evolved to the point of breaking down barriers to entry in many industries. A college professor or anyone who has aspirations on becoming of teaching at the higher education level can now do so by setting up their own website, installing a learning management system, developing their own course content, and getting accredited by organizations such as ACE Credit to allow students to earn credits to be transferred to a university. How you get higher education is about to change forever.
